Breast Augmentation FAQs

What is Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is the aesthetic procedure of transferring fat or using implants to increase breast size. Often sought out after the patient has lost volume due to weight loss or pregnancy, this procedure can be used to improve the shape and correct the natural asymmetry of the breasts.

As far as the type of implant goes, Dr. Niki Christopoulos uses silicone or saline breast implants that are designed to last more than a decade. In most cases, the saline or silicone breast implants stay in good condition for more than 20 years. (I don’t think NC would want this included??)

Why Get A Breast Augmentation

Since a breast augmentation procedure is a voluntary, it comes down to personal choice whether or not you receive this treatment. That being said, there are plenty of reasons why a client patient would undergo breast augmentation surgery.

Some of the main motivations for this procedure include improving self-image and confidence, improving the balance of your breast and hip contours, getting breasts that match your body type, or correcting the asymmetry of your breasts .

Besides the obvious benefits of shaping and increasing your breasts size, implants are highly customizable, so you get the silhouette you desire. Implants can also be used to restore the area around the natural breasts after an injury or mastectomy. In this case, augmentation can be used in the natural breast tissue or chest muscle recovery process.

Additional Considerations Before Undergoing Plastic Surgery

Just like any surgical procedure, you will want to ensure that you are in decent health before the operation. Your plastic surgeon will have several topics to discuss before and after your surgery, including implant sizing, realistic expectations and additional treatments you might consider.

The most common treatment that is used in conjunction with augmentation is a breast lift, which can reduce sagging or drooping.

Dr. Christopoulos will also discuss the location of the implant (completely under the pectoralis muscle, partially under the muscle, or above the muscle) as well as the location of the incision (under the breast or inframammary, around the areola, or in the armpit). For the procedure, you will be put under general anesthesia while the surgeon operates.

What Recovery and Follow Up Looks Like Post-OP

The average recovery time post-operation is approximately two weeks, during which time you will likely experience bruising, swelling, and some numbness. Within a few days, you will be able to return to daily activities, though you should avoid strenuous activities for several weeks. Dr. Christopoulos will guide you through the recovery process, recommending the types of bras that should be worn and massage techniques that will assist in healing.

It is also helpful to keep in mind that implants may eventually need to be replaced and that some patients later choose to have their implants removed due to personal choice.
