Abdominoplasty and Tummy Tuck Surgery in Chicago

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, also referred to as tummy tuck surgery, is a type of body contouring procedure meant to remove weight around the core and tighten the abdominal area. Typically, individuals with separations between their stomach muscles have loose skin around the midsection causing a less than optimal appearance. An abdominoplasty helps smooth and tighten the abdominal area, improving appearance, which boosts confidence and improves self-esteem.

Who is a Good Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery in Chicago?

Clients who may benefit from tummy tuck surgery are those who:

  • Are overweight
  • Recently gave birth
  • See stubborn body fat around the midsection that diet and exercise can’t resolve

During your initial consultation, Dr. Niki Christopolous will ask about your medical history to better understand your goals and the best options for your surgery; this includes any history of hernias, fatty tissue, or abdominal abnormalities. Then, she will review what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Everyone’s procedure is different, because each of our clients has specific needs based on their health history and their goals. Our individualistic approach allows us to provide the best tummy tuck results for each of our valued clients.

What to Expect Before and During the Procedure

We focus on two main procedural techniques for a tummy tuck: a full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck. Both require some preparation to ensure the surgery is successful. Dr. Cristopolous will review your medical history to account for any past incidents. From there, depending on the procedure, she will offer general anesthesia in conjunction with an anesthesiologist for your comfort and safety.

The full tummy tuck requires an incision in the pubic area between hip bones. Then, a second incision near the naval will position the belly button and upper abdominal skin. The exact position where the incision is made depends on your preference to account for scarring. Depending on the amount of adipose (fat) tissue in your midsection, we may recommend liposuction to create a smoother, firmer contour.

The mini tummy tuck is similar to the full tummy tuck, but is mainly recommended to clients with less excess skin and fat deposits.  During this procedure, Dr. Christopolous will make an incision in the pubic region, but no incision near the naval.

Recovery and Results

The length of time for recovery differs with each individual client. Swelling typically diminishes after two weeks with proper aftercare. Post-surgical compression garments, reducing sodium intake, and staying hydrated is shown to reduce swelling and stretch marks.

If you experience light bruising or numbness in your midsection, please keep in mind this is expected and normal. You can likely resume daily activities and return to work within a few days following your procedure. We usually recommend avoiding any strenuous activity until three weeks post op. However, the progress will vary, depending on your post-surgical condition and your follow-up appointments.
