Preventing Skin Cancer in Chicago

Moles, also known as “nevi,” are collections of melanocytes, which are pigmented skin cells. While most moles are harmless, regular check-ups are essential. This is especially true if you have a lot of moles, skin tags, or other skin problems.

Mole Varieties

Because moles can change over time, it is critical to conduct regular skin checks. These help detect any concerning changes in shape, size, color, or texture. Moles are typically round, flat, and brown, but there are several varieties:

  • Atypical Nevi: Moles with irregular shapes that might mean a higher skin cancer risk
  • Congenital Nevi: Moles you’re born with
  • Dermal Melanocytic Nevi: Light brown, raised moles that look like common moles.
  • Halo Nevi: Small moles with a white ring around them
  • Junctional Melanocytic Nevi: Brown, round, flat moles with irregular edges
  • Miescher Nevi: Brownish, raised moles that might have hair growing from them, often found on the face or neck
  • Unna Nevi: Similar to Miescher nevi, usually found on the arms, neck, or torso

The most common skin cancer is Basal Cell Carcinoma and the second most common skin cancer is Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Melanoma is another type of skin cancer that is considered more serious because it has the tendency to spread. Skin cancers tend to grow due to overexposure of UV rays, from either direct sunlight or use of indoor tanning beds. Individuals with certain genetic conditions, longstanding skin diseases, scarring, immune-suppression, or exposure to certain chemicals can be more susceptible to skin cancer as well. Early detection and treatment of skin cancers is crucial. One way to achieve an early diagnosis is to get a skin cancer screening by a trained dermatology provider who thoroughly examines your skin head-to-toe while using a dermatoscope. The frequency of skin cancer screenings will be determined by your providers and depends on certain risk factors, personal history of skin cancer, and family history of skin cancer. In addition to full body skin examinations, be diligent about early detection of skin cancer by performing your own monthly self exams looking for new growths, sores that don’t heal, and spots that change, itch, or bleed. Regardless of your age or skin type, you should always make sun protection a daily habit. Schedule a full body skin examination so we can ensure you are following the best sun protective measures!
